Resort pools or natural springs

Arenal’s resorts pipe volcanic-heated water into landscaped pools at several temperatures, with changing rooms and restaurants. Natural river spots are free or cheap but have rocks, currents and no facilities. In Guanacaste, Rincón de la Vieja’s springs are usually combined with an active hike.

Who should be careful

Hot water raises the heart rate. People who are pregnant, have heart or blood-pressure conditions, or are sensitive to heat should ask their doctor first. Stay hydrated and limit long soaks.
